About Our Center

The Penny George Institute for Health and Healing was founded in 2003 and has steadily flourished since that time under the guidance of Lori Knutson RN, BSN, HNC, Executive Director. In 2007, Gregory Plotnikoff MD, MTS, Medical Director; and Jeffery Dusek PhD, Research Director, joined the Institute's leadership team. The Institute offers innovative, proactive models of care that embrace the strengths of the whole person — body, mind and spirit — within the context of their families and communities, and that promote an understanding of the interdependent nature of healing.

Treatments and Services

The Institute offers inpatient services throughout Abbott Northwestern Hospital, a 629 bed tertiary hospital in Minneapolis and flagship hospital of Allina Hospitals and Clinics.  In-patient integrative medicine services are provided by practitioner teams consisting of a certified holistic nurse, a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a medical massage therapist.  Currently, the practitioners provide services to patients across the entire hospital including Orthopedics, the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, Spine Care, Women's Health, Cardiovascular Services, Neurosciences, and the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute.

Out-patient services are offered at the Outpatient Clinic.  Services include integrative medical consultations, healing and health coaching, mind/body therapies, nutritional counseling, acupuncture/acupressure, biofeedback, energy work and retail products including nutriceuticals and herbs.  In addition, new programming includes the "Resilience Training" program by Dr. Henry Emmons, based on his book The Chemistry of Joy.  The program is an eight-week workshop designed to help participants learn how the mind perpetuates stress and then use meditation to work through difficult emotions and manage stress.  In addition to clinical care, the Institute offers education programs for both physicians and nurses and a full complement of classes for the general public in subjects ranging from art to mindfulness based stress reduction. The LiveWell Fitness Center includes state of the art diagnostic equipment such as the Bod Pod, Body Gem and the more conventional metabolic cart employing exercise physiologists, dieticians, and a physical therapist.

Educational programs at the Institute for Health Healing focus on:

  • professional education in conventional and complementary care
  • patient and client education that promotes self-managed health and wellness
  • community classes and programs that provide an understanding of the principles and therapies of integrative medicine
  • nurse training program
