What has come to be called integrative medicine is a rapidly growing and highly credible field that seeks to integrate the best of Western scientific medicine with a broader understanding of the nature of illness, healing and wellness.

The Pioneers of Integrative Medicine Honored

More than 600 people gathered on November 8, 2007 at the Grand Hyatt in New York City to honor the Pioneers of Integrative Medicine.

At the beginning of any cultural movement that seeks to change the status quo, a small number of people will step forward, often risking their own careers, to articulate the problems and define the new ways of being.  These pioneers are the forerunners - they are the first to question what is and what could be, the first to navigate the uncharted ground, and the first to blueprint the new paradigms. Being a pioneer takes foresight and courage.

On Thursday November 8, 2007, the Bravewell Collaborative hosted the Inaugural Pioneers of Integrative Medicine Award Event to honor six of the early leaders of Integrative Medicine whose work in the 1980s and 1990s paved the way for a new era in American medicine. Master of Ceremonies, Mehmet Oz, MD joined with all the Bravewell Collaborative members to congratulate each "Pioneer" and confer a cash award of $25,000 to recognize, empower and support his or her efforts in transforming the culture of health care.

The Pioneers of Integrative Medicine honored were:
Larry Dossey, MD
James Gordon, MD
Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD
Dean Ornish, MD
Rachel Remen, MD
Andrew Weil, MD
